Building and Development

Building Safety: The Department of Building Safety is responsible for issuing building permits and conducting inspections for compliance with City, State and National building codes. Code enforcement is also part of the Building Safety Department and is responsible for enforcing the property maintenance ordinance.

Economic Development and Redevelopment: Economic development and redevelopment activity throughout Hastings is handled by the Hastings Economic Development and Redevelopment Authority (HEDRA). This Authority oversees the Industrial Park, downtown development, redevelopment along the Vermillion corridor, and offers a variety of housing assistance opportunites.

Historic Preservation: The City of Hastings established a Heritage Preservation Commission to work with property owners to retain the historical and unique past of the community. The responsibility of this Commission is to identify significant sites throughout the City for preservation. Over the past 30 years the Commission has identified and designated roughly 170 properties as historic.

Planning: The Planning Department is responsible for planning and zoning for the City of Hastings. This involves variance requests, site plan review, preliminary and final plat review, conditional use permit requests, and developing the City's comprehensive plan. The Planning Commission oversees these activies.
