UTILITIES – WATER DEPARTMENT

The Water Department operates and maintains the City’s water supply system consisting of approximately 86 miles of water mains, six wells and three water storage tanks with a combined storage volume of 2.75 million gallons, and one nitrate removal plant.  The City’s water supply comes from its six wells.  The wells are drilled into the Jordan Aquifer.  An aquifer is an underground lake imbedded in rock, in this case a sandstone rock layer.  The City’s wells are about 300-400 feet deep with a large cavity at the bottom. The Jordan water has spent many decades flowing through the rock layers to reach our wells.  During that period, organisms that might have caused illness and diseases have died and been filtered out by the rock layers, and the water has dissolved minerals that were imbedded in the rock.  Currently, the only treatment added to our well water is fluoride.  The City’s well water is pumped to two elevated tanks, and one ground storage tank.  The water pressure in your home is in relationship to the height of the tank above your residence.
