The Hastings Fire Department wants to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. We would also like to ask for your help with our annual "Keep the Wreath White" campaign. A large wreath decorated with all white lights has been hung on the Vermillion Street side of the fire station. This wreath will stay in place from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. During this timeframe, a single red bulb will replace a single white bulb for every preventable structure fire. Every year our goal is to have all white lights remaining at the end of the holiday season. In 2009 we responded to five preventable structure fires, and in 2008 we responded to four preventable structure fires. This year we have already had one structure fire, which occurred on Thanksgiving Day, and we had to change one single white bulb to a single red bulb. Our goal this year is to prevent fires from starting in your homes and offices. Here are some simple things each of us can do this season to prevent fires from starting: Keep lit candles away from decorations, trees, and other things that can catch fire; never leave candles unattended; never leave your stove or cook-top unattended while cooking; have a working fire extinguisher stored in your kitchen and accessible in case of fire. Never store combustible materials on or in your stove, many times people set food storage containers and other items on, and sometimes in the stove; outdoor cooking such as turkey fryers and grills should be moved away from the structure, never indoors including your garage, and all manufacturers' guidelines should be followed. These are just a few thoughts on ways we can all prevent fires this holiday season. During this holiday season, let us keep the lights on the wreath to that one red bulb, and reduce the number of fires in and around the City of Hastings. Stay safe and from our house to yours, we wish you all Happy Holidays!
