The graffiti included racial slurs along with other derogatory terms and hate messages. Officer Bauer himself was pulled under water by the strong currents however, utilizing his extensive water rescue training while in the military, Officer Bauer was able to get to the surface, swim to the stranded victims, and assist the two men to safety at the river's edge where Hastings Firefighters pulled them from the water. Monday night Bauer was awarded the Hasting Police Department's highest honor for his actions.
