Police service dogs (K-9s) are primarily used as a locating tool because of their exceptional scenting and locating abilities. Their sense of smell allows the police service dog to locate persons or drugs much more quickly and effectively than just officers alone.
A police service dog can also be used as a “Use-of-Force” option if necessary. A handler may deploy the police service dog if it is deemed necessary by the handler. A police service dog may be deployed if a violent and/or dangerous person is attempting to elude arrest by fleeing or hiding.
The ultimate goal of a police service dog is to assist and protect the public at all costs. Dangerous situations can be resolved quickly and effectively by utilizing a police service dog.
Since the retirement of K-9 Eis in March of 2011, a new K-9, named Ozzy, has graduated and is working the streets of Hastings. Ozzy, along with sixteen other K-9’s, attended a 12 week training program at the St. Paul Canine Training Center. The class started in early March with graduation being held at the end of May. During that span Ozzy was trained in criminal apprehension, obedience, area searches, building searches, handler protection, agility exercises, tracking and evidence search and recovery.
In the fall of 2011, Ozzy will partake in a 3 week training program for narcotic detection. Once completed, Ozzy will then be considered a cross-trained police service dog.
Ozzy was imported from Eastern Europe and was bred specifically for police work. Ozzy arrived in the United States in February of 2011 at the age of 8 months old. Ozzy is an all black male German shepherd dog.
You can see Ozzy at any of the numerous functions he attends or at the public demonstrations that are done periodically throughout the year.
