The Dakota County Drug Task Force was initiated in 1999 and consists of 11 Police Departments in Dakota County and the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies provide officers and deputies to belong to this group, which forms its own jurisdiction and charging authority for all of Dakota County.
Each participating agency dedicates and assigns trained drug officers to the Drug Task Force for a certain number of hours each year. The officer is taken off of their regular Police Department's schedule for a period of time each month and assigned to work at the drug task force to assist in drug investigations throughout the county. The advantage to this is that officers can work on drug investigative cases in other jurisdictions where they are not a part of the particular city police department and are not known in that community. There is also a greater resource established in having a large pool of officers to draw from, resulting in consistent work and investigative follow-up coordinated by one agency and charging authority.
