Recognizing the citizens concerns throughout Dakota County regarding traffic safety and enforcement issues, Dakota County and its 12 cities signed a Joint Powers Agreement in 2005 forming the Dakota County Traffic Safety Group. The concept of the program is to have the group meet at different communities or areas in the county at various times throughout the year to work traffic enforcement in that area and community. Each department sends one or two officers and squads, and the group, which could be up to 24 squads and officers, works strictly on traffic enforcement saturation in the community and area.
This countywide sharing of manpower and resources is the first of its kind in the state of Minnesota. The State of Minnesota recognized this cooperative traffic safety initiative by awarding grant funding to help reimburse the cities for their costs involving this program.
