The City of Hastings now reads all of their water meters electronically, employees no longer need to come directly to your home to read the meter. A radio read unit (an mxu) is attached by wire to the meter inside your home, which allows them to be read electronically from a distance.
The radio units run on batteries that will eventually need to be changed out. This is oneoccasion where a City employee would need to gain access to your home, other reasons might be to wire up your meter and radio read unit, or to repair/replace a meter. Employees usually leave cards on resident's doors stating why they need to get inside and request a phone call back to set up an appointment. All Utility employees carry a picture I.D. card.
