It is unlawful to litter within the State of Minnesota per Minnesota Statute 169.42 Nonetheless, trash and other forms of litter find its way onto the right-of-ways of Minnesota roads and highways. Recognizing the need for periodic sprucing up of these areas, MNDOT chooses to oversee a program called “Adopt a Highway.”
Adopt a Highway is a service program for volunteering community groups, churches, businesses etc to adopt a highway by picking up litter on both sides of the roadway for a minimum commitment of two years. For additional information and details for how to participate visit Adopt a Highway.
